Fishing Report - November 9 to November 16, 2008
10:03pm - Nov 16, 2008

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:  Trout fishing on the Kitimat River has been very good when the weather has been favorable.

The weather has been erratic, sunny one day, snowing the next.  We received our first snow fall on Thursday November 13th

.

The majority of the Trout reported have been caught in the tributaries of the Kitimat River.  Nalabila Creek and Goose Creek have been the hot spots.  Worms have been the most effective bait for trout but float fishing a dick nite has also done well. The Kitimat Hatchery Staff has started brood collection to continue their enhancement of the Cutthroat Trout population on the Kitimat River.  We are indeed fortunate to have the Kitimat River Hatchery.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:  Not much to report

November 9. David Tremblay and sons. Captain Corey Wakita

When the water is like glass, the sky is blue and the sun is out even November days on the Douglas can be spectacular.

David Tremblay and I left the house at noon with David’s sons Axel and Lyf and my son, Corey.   We baited and dropped a couple of crab traps, trolled for winter springs for a couple of hours, pulled the traps and we were back home by 4:00 p.m. with a feed of crab. (in time for Corey's hockey)  We didn't catch any fish but we are truly blessed to enjoy such wonderful moments with our sons on the Douglas.  Crabbing with kids is always an adventure.

Winter Springs are not yet in the Kitimat Harbour but the Kitimat Harbour Fishery is a bit unpredictable.  The Winter Chinook follow feed, usually herring, into the harbour starting in November and can stay into February, March when the herring start to spawn.  The fishery happens whenever the herring show.  It is a fun fishery but requires some patience and some good weather.  I will update this report when the "bites on".

Fishing Report - November 2 to November 9, 2008
2:08pm - Nov 11, 2008

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:  As the snow creeps lower and lower down the mountains we have not yet received any snow in the valley.  We usually receive our first snow fall in the last week of October but this year we have received large amounts of rain instead.  Despite the amount of rain we have received the Kitimat River has remained fishable.

November 4. Ariel landed 29 trout and one Coho

November 7. Ariel landed 13 trout and one Coho

Since retention of Coho closed October 31st, trout fishing has been the focus on the Kitimat River.

Ariel Kuppers who is an associate guide for Reliable Guide and Charters while doing some personal fishing this week had some exceptional days trout fishing.  Ariel was fishing Goose Creek which is a tributary of the Kitimat River with a "Pink Worm Combo".  The "Pink Worm Combo" comprises of a 2 1\2" Pink Worm and half of a dew worm.  This rig can either be float fished or bottom bounced.  This "Pink Worm Combo" has evolved over the years and was first developed by Pat Oliver.  Pat and I have ordered and tried different colours and sizes of worms over the years until the "Pink Worm Combo" emerged to the top of the list.  It is amazing how the different methods and favorite lures that evolve on different river systems. Being in the Tackle business has allowed us to be in constant contact with all the Fishing tackle manufacturers.   I receive samples at all the Tackle Shows and through our guiding/charter company we have tested numerous lures and techniques over the years.  We have had specialty colors and lures manufactured for our fishery.  Over the years we have had Gibbs make some specific colours for the Kitimat River to fish Chinook and Coho.  We have had Delta Tackle make some mini Hoochies to fish for Chinook.  We have had Luhr Jensen make some Hot Shots and Kwik Fish.  We have spent countless hours planning, designing and fishing different rigs in pursuit of the ultimate lure for a specific species.  The search for better and more effective lures and techniques is ongoing!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:  Not much to report from the Douglas Channel this week as the weather has not been favorable for fishing.  The forecast is for calm winds this weekend so some boaters should be out fishing for winter springs.  Stay tuned to this report for updates.

Fishing Report - October 26 to November 2, 2008
11:54am - Nov 4, 2008

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:  Retention for Coho salmon on the Kitimat River closed Oct 31st which officially brings salmon fishing on the Kitimat River for 2008 to an end.  Trout fishing on the Kitimat River will continue through the winter and into the spring depending on the weather but salmon fishing is now done.

The Kitimat Hatchery brood collection crew will be collecting their brood stock to continue enhancing the Coho on the Kitimat River.  Stock assessments will also be in progress to determine the size of this year's Coho return.  It will be interesting to review the results of the numbers of Coho that made it to the spawning beds.

We are so fortunate to have the Kitimat Hatchery on the Kitimat River.  The Kitimat Hatchery enhances Cutthroat trout, Steelhead, Chinook, Chum and Coho stocks on the Kitimat River.  The management and staff of the Kitimat Hatchery should be recognized for the amazing job that they have done.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:  A few boaters ventured out to doing a little crabbing and to check if the winter springs were in the Kitimat Harbour.  No winter springs were reported this week but as one boater noted "Remembrance Day is the day were I always start to do well for winter springs".  We will soon see if his theory proves to be true. Stay tuned.

Fishing Report - October 19 to October 26, 2008
9:59am - Oct 28, 2008

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:  The Kitimat River was exceptionally high and dirty for most of this week and river conditions were un-fishable.  This is typical this time of the year as the autumn rainfall can be excessive and the river level can rise up as much as 4 to 5 feet in 24 hours.  But once it stops raining the river can drop and clean in the same amount of time.  The river has been dropping and should clean for this weekend. Anglers are reminded that Coho on the Kitimat River closes for retention October 31st.  There are lots of Coho in the Kitimat River but the majority of the fish have turned to spawning colours

.

The trout fishery will continue to do well throughout the fall and winter months.  This fishery relies on favorable weather and river conditions to be good.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:  High winds and rain throughout most of this week deterred most boaters from fishing the Douglas Channel.  The forecast for this weekend is for more favorable conditions and I spoke to two boaters heading out for crab and bottom fish.  No winter springs have been reported in the Kitimat Harbour fishery yet but there are lots of boats left in the marinas that are planning to fish the winter springs when they show up.  Stay tuned to this fishing report for updates.

Fishing Report - October 12 to October 19, 2008
11:08am - Oct 20, 2008

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:   We have reached the last stages of our Coho season and the majority of the Kitimat Coho are now in their spawning colours.  We have received reports of a few brighter Coho so it is still possible to catch some silver fish.  The upper stretch of the Kitimat River from the 18 mile bridge to Sawmill seems to have the largest numbers of Coho "stacked up".  The 18 mile rock, the Air Park and the upper Sawmill have been the better holes to fish this past week.

October 13th morning. David Tremblay. Hooked two landed one.

We have also received reports of a bunch of trout in the Powerlines hole.  The Kitimat River has pretty good stocks of Dolly Varden Char and Hatchery enhanced stocks of Sea Run Cutthroat trout.  Trout fishing on the Kitimat River will continue from now until spring only limited by river and weather conditions.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:  During every trip to the marina I notice more and more empty slips.  The boats that are left are usually anglers who plan to fish through the winter.

We have received reports of winter Springs further down the Douglas but have not heard of any in the Kitimat Harbour yet.  It is a great fishery when the fish are in but it is one of most difficult fisheries to predict timing.  It just happens when it happens.  The winter Chinook are following feed and when the feed arrives in the harbour so will the feeder Chinook.  When the Chinook are in it can be a very exciting fishery.  Stay tuned.
